Tour Description
Follow the path of the lava flow 200 meters into the cave and 35 meters below the surface. Vatnshellir cave is one of the most easily accessible lava tubes in Iceland and is suitable for most people. Even so, you need to be reasonably fit to walk in the dark cave on uneven lava floor and up and down spiral staircases inside the cave. The lava tube was naturally created nearly 8000 years ago in a volcanic eruption from a nearby crater. In this 45-minute guided tour you get to know the basics of how the cave came to be in a fun and educative explanation on the local geology. This is our easiest and most popular tour by far!
You need to dress warmly for the cave tour, since the temperature is just above freezing throughout the year. Hiking shoes/boots are recommended but sneakers are acceptable. We will not permit high heels or flat-bottom shoes including flip-flops for this activity. Gloves are recommended for your safety and comfort. If you fall down, gloves can save your hands from the knife-sharp lava rock!
Please show up at the cave at least 10 minutes before the tour to check in.
We supply helmets and flashlights/torches, headlamps are not allowed inside the cave.
Please keep in mind that the closest restrooms are at Malarrif Visitor Center.
